Most people do not know the definition of a dietitian; however, they can tell what a nutritionist would do or specialize in just based on having nutrition in the title. The academy has recently made an adjustment to the official title to include nutritionist at the end for less confusion. So oftentimes, you will see RDN (registered dietitian nutritionist) or RD (registered dietitian) and even LD (licensed dietitian), which all certify that a professional has gone through an undergraduate program, along with a supervised practice, and passed national exams. The academy’s definition of an RDN is as follows, “ Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) are food and nutrition experts with a degree from an accredited dietetics program and who completed a 1200-hour supervised practice requirement, passed a national exam and continued professional development throughout their careers.” Many states also require an RDN/RD to be licensed in individual states in order to practice; this is where the LD credential comes from. In 2024, the requirement to sit for the national exam now includes a mandatory master’s degree to be eligible.
